Suppliers

We specialise in dealing with redundant ex-corporate computer equipment which has been replaced due to upgrade. While most other similar companies actually charge for removal of older, obsolete equipment, we operate a revenue share system whereby you will be paid a negotiated percentage of the net profit generated by the resale of your redundant equipment upon completion of sale. Of course, all data on hard drives will be fully erased and a log provided for each drive to confirm this. Also we are fully covered with public and product liability insurance and so will take full responsibility for the equipment after it has been removed from your premises; there will be no comebacks to you.

We will remove all logos, data-wipe, test and refurbish all equipment prior to sale to generate the best possible price and ensure your return is maximised. Anticipated turn-around after collection, on average, is one month though for large collections this may be longer. We pay commission on a monthly basis at the end of each month and provide a full statement of sale.

So, if like many organisations, you have a room full of redundant equipment and wish to capitalise on its present second-hand resale value please do not hesitate to contact us and arrange an appointment to discuss mutually agreeable terms.

The Clearance Procedure

Safe Disposal, The Process. The process begins with a personal visit to the site to view the equipment requiring disposal. From this, we can value the items and advise if there is either a residual value or a disposal cost.  As it is more likely that there will indeed be a residual value negotiations will be entered into regarding the percentage of the net profit to be paid back to the customer on resale of any equipment.

Once an agreement has been formed, one of our own vans and uniformed drivers will call and remove the equipment as efficiently and tidily as possible. From the customer's site, the items are taken directly to our receiving centre in Llanberis, where they are inspected and an audit is undertaken.

Once our customer has inspected the audit report and given the go-ahead to proceed, the items are released from the secure area and the remaining process begins as shown below.

1.        Valuation and negotiation.

2.        Customer calls to arrange collection.

3.        Collection from customer site.

4.        Delivered direct to a secure unit.

5.        Once customer has authorised go-ahead hard drives are wiped and any non-repairable hard drives are destroyed

6.        Saleable equipment is remarketed and disposal of obsolete equipment.

7.        Commission paid to customer on a monthly basis until all equipment sold.

Collection and Handling Collections are made by our own staff always at the convenience of the customer. Our drivers are always smart and courteous and will quietly and politely carry out the collection of the old equipment.

Logistics and audits We perform an audit and send the results to our customer, normally within 7 to 14 days. All identification of the previous owner such as asset tags, safety labels etc; is removed prior to the destruction of the hard drive software and data.

Safe Data Removal One of the greatest concerns people have, when disposing of their old computer equipment, is the removal of the personal data contained on them. The dangers of not properly erasing the hard drives can open up the possibility of unwelcome publicity and even prosecution either under the Software Copyright Act or Data Protection Act 1984.

But how can you ensure that the data has been deleted? The DOS and Windows command to delete files do not delete the data from your disk. They merely delete their own record of the fact that the area of the disk they occupy is unavailable to other uses. To do this, it merely unlinks the file in its File Allocation Table (FAT) by changing the first character of its name to a special byte. Consequently, the undelete commands merely have to change the character back to restore the data, as is amply demonstrated, retrieving deleted files from the Windows recycle bin. Contrary to popular belief, formatting a drive does not affect the disk data as the command merely formats a new file record for that logical drive.

The only way to irretrievably destroy data, without physically destroying the whole disk, is by multiple overwriting of the data. This generates and records random characters across the whole of the drive surface and thereby obliterates all data and resets file sizes to zero. All working hard drives received by us are erased using the above standard. Non-working drives that cannot be powered up to receive multiple overwriting are destroyed physically before delivery to a scrap metal recycling plant.

What is the Data Protection Act? Following on from the original 1984 Act, the 1998 updated Act makes it a legal requirement to take appropriate security measures against unauthorised access to, alteration, disclosure, or destruction of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of personal data. Failure to comply can lead to enforcement action by the Data Protection Registrar as well as possible compensation claims from individuals through the courts.

Snowdon Computers is registered with the Information Commission to handle, and dispose of, personal data. Registration No: Z7254955

Dumping on the cheap is risky. Lincolnshire County Council was embarrassed to find in 1998 that the computers it sent for scrap turned up on the second hand market. To make matters worse, the hard drives contained details on 50 child abuse cases. Under the Data Protection Act, failure to data wipe a computers hard drive of personal data can result in Crown Court prosecution and unlimited fines. In addition, the injured individuals can sue companies in breach of  this.

Snowdon Computers will protect personal data in accordance with the provisions and principles of the Data Protection Act 1984 and the Data Protection Act 1998 and in particular Snowdon Computers will ensure compliance with the client's security arrangements and ensure the reliability of its staff who have access to any personal data held by the client.  In addition, if Snowdon Computers is required to access or process personal data held by the client, Snowdon Computers shall keep all such personal data secure at all times and shall only process such data in accordance with instructions received from the client. Recycling The last thing any of our customers wants is for anything of theirs turning up at a car boot sale prominently identified as once belonging to them. That is why we go to great lengths to ensure that un-saleable or un-repairable items are disposed of in a responsible and acceptable manner. Upon request we will supply a care certificate, which guarantees that any waste will be disposed of legally. All responsible companies will issue this and thereby ensure that your products do not end up fly tipped at the side of the road.

Product Liability As, when selling or even donating equipment, the individual supplying the equipment can be held responsible for any future damage or loss incurred by failure of it (Such as electrical fires) we have our own Product and Public Liability Insurance so, should any electronic equipment fail there will be no comeback to the company disposing of the goods. When equipment is removed from our customer’s site, it is on the agreement that it is non working and not fit for use. This therefore absolves our customer from all future liability to their redundant equipment.

Costs and charges Our method of charging is simple yet advantageous to the customer. We view and value this with some items have a residual value and some have a disposal cost. By deducting the estimated residual value from the estimated total disposal costs, a negative or positive amount is arrived at, and a percentage net profit split is agreed depending on the above estimations. Whether a one off collection or an ongoing long-term contract, accounts are settled on a monthly basis.

The old equipment is resold or scrapped depending upon any residual value it may retain. Where possible, equipment is refurbished, (or merely cleaned) repaired and resold in, the UK or overseas. Sometimes, equipment requires upgrading to be resalable such as having CD drives and extra memory added.
